PROVINCIAL COURT.

REQUEST TO BOARD.

MODEL OF PLAN EXPLAINED.

Shown a ecale architect's model of the Provincial Court for the 1940 New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, the Auck. land Transport Board were asked this morning to make a suitable contribution towards the total cost of £60,000 for this work. The request was made following I representations presented by .Messrs. L. D. Nathan, C. H. Furness, Lewis Walker and Ronald Muston, who waited in deputation on the board. It was decided to defer consideration of a contribution for a fortnight. Mr. Nathan, chairman of the finance committee of the Auckland Provincial committee, said that the exhibition would last from November, 1939, to November, 1940. The concern was to see that adequate display was given to the provinces, and that they were not dealt with in the usual way of the past —with piles of butter boxes, and so on, that were of no interest whatever to the general public. A comprehensive plan had been drawn up for a novel display dealing fairly and interestingly with the activities of each of the provinces. It was estimated that this would cost £60,000, allocated in a fair ratio to the various provincial councils. The principle of the court had been accepted by these councils and the exhibition company, but it remained now for the finances to be found—£l2,ooo was expected from the Auckland Province, based on an assessment of 15/ for each 100 of' population and £21 for each £1,000,000 of gross ratable value. The Auckland City Council had not yet made a decision regarding its suggested allocation, but it was hoped that it would contribute substantially* A tour of the protince had also been made, and the result Was gratifying. There had been no definite refusals, and already £2000 had been contributed. The model was then demonstrated by the architects, Messrs. Walker and Muston, and the various ideas incorporated were explained. The question was deferred on the motion of the chairman, the Hon. F. E. Lark, M.L.C.
