MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT.
WOMAN FOR SENTENCE.
Charged with stealing a lady's cardigan valued at £1 19/ from a eity store last Friday, Elizabeth Amy Carmody, aged 42, appeared before Mr. CL R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty.
At 2.45 last Friday afternoon, said Sub-Inspector Fox, accused after examining a number of cardigans, was seen to place one over her arm and walk to a floor below. She wae followed by an assistant and when accosted she at first said the article was her own property, but later she admitted the theft and offered to pay for the cardigan. "This wonlan had £3 10/ in her possession at the time and she also has a substantial bank account," said SubInspector Fox. "She is a widow with a grown-up family of two and is employed as a housekeeper at £1 10/ per week. She has never been in trouble before. Her house was searched by the police but no stolen property was found."
Appearing for the accused. Mr. Aekins said Mrs. Carmody had reached a period of life which might have accounted for her lapse. Her arrest had had a very salutary effect upon her. Counsel suggested that the case might be met with a fine in view of her previous good character.
"I said the other day that I would have to consider imprisonment in these cases," said the magistrate. "They are persisting." Accused was remanded in custody until Wednesdav for sentence.
