A DEFINITE PLAN.

DEFENCE SCHEME.

" HOPING FOR THE BEST." STATEMENT BY MR. SAVAGE. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary reporter.) WELLINGTON, this clay. A meeting of the Defence Council, comprising members of the Government and lirads of tlie three services, was held in the Prime Minister's room at Parliament Building this morning. The Prime Minister, the Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage, was asked by an interviewer if this meeting had been called owilier to the strained position of European polities. His reply was that the Defence Council has been in existence for a long time, and periodical meetings arc held. "The heads of the three services—the Navy, Army and Air Forces—were present." he added, "and reasonable preparations for emergencies were considered. It is just a matter of being prepared. We are hoping for the best, but we must, of course, be prepared for the worst, though it does not mean that there is anything untoward or inevitable. It just means common sense. "We are in constant touch with the British Government, and everything reasonable' is being done. We set out on a definite plan for the defence of the country a long time ago, and the state of the world justifies our action."
