BORE OPTIMISM FOR CZECH SEITLEMENT.

ANXIOUS DAY PASSES.

Sudeten Leader Consults

With Hitler.

HELP TO CLEAR THE AIR

l nf"l Press Association.—Copyright.

(Received I.' noon.) LOXDOX, September 2. Alter the most anxious day since the L/ce< h-ticrnian crisis began Czech Government members are more optimistic. Dr. Benes and Ilerr Kundt will again meet on Monday. Tt h- s now been decided that Dr/Benes wfu not issue details of the new proposals at present. 'Hie 'Daily Telegraph" Prague correspondent says that presumably tic Hen lein party decision to accept or «Tl ' ! 10t Le take " before HenHe,dens return, but the fact of the conference with Dr. Rones „» attitude not wholly negative. Keuters Prague correspondent savs He r Hitlnr'h 1" *, hal>P - v i,l 't'ative to VirtStd™ „'}r ; hc ,*"• ti, » h«s been justitel bi it, suraes. " I ' PC * l The. wording of the statement after the meet,ng of Herr Henlein and HerHitler disposes of the fear that a peace breach is contemplated. There i 3 no confirmation or what are described as a variety of vaguely re airing reports given prominence f„ the London evening Press, including a statement that Germany assured °Sir I . Henderson she would not take precipitate action, which is denied in The ''Daily Telegraph" Berlin correspondent says it is believed Herr Hitler instructed Herr Henlein not to rceede on fundamentals. After a luncheon discussion, it was announced that Herr Hitler " was in agreement with Herr Henlein's views of the situation and Herr Henlein departed. An official statement issued later said: "The Fuehrer received Herr Henlein who, as Viscount Kuncinian wished, gave him information regarding the negotiations at Prague. The Fuehrer took cognisance of the explanations with interest. There is complete agreement in the judging of the situation?' The fact that Dr. Benes' interview with Herr Kundt and Herr Sebekovsky was a lengthy one, coupled with the Berchtesgaden announcement, give the situation a much more favourable turn. It is understood the Sudetens sought guarantees that Czechoslovakia would fulfil the concessions in three months and considered the interview the most promising yet given. The British United Press Berlin representative reported that it was authoritatively stated that Germany had assured Sir Nevile Henderson that she will not take precipitate steps to settle the Czech crisis. Britain in return had promised that if the Czech proposals and the Sudeten counter-proposals result in a deadlock Lord Runciman would publish his own conclusions and suggestions in the middle of September. Sir Nevile Henderson. British Ambassador at Berlin, says "The Times" correspondent, saw Herr von Ribbentrop privately and gave his frank, personal impression of the British policy, but received no clear statement of German policy. The "News Chronicle" Berlin representative understands that Herr Hitler pent a message to Viscount Runciman rejecting the cantonal plan and demanding autonomy for the Sudetens as an undivided bloc. He insists that the "basis of settlement must enable the Sudetens to co-operate loyally in the Czech State." Herr Hitler granted an interview to the Berchtesgaden representative of "Le Journal," but did not illuminate the Czech crisis beyond stressing Nazi-ism's need of peace. He emphasised that France and Germany, as two peoples, had fewer reasons to hate than to mutually respect each other, says a Paris message. *
