GAY CHOU.

EX-SYDNEY SPRINTER.

WANGANUI ENTRANT.

NOTES ON RECENT FORM.

A very interesting entrant for the Wanganui meeting, to be held next month, is Gav Chou, the Gay Lothario gelding Mr. Walter Devon purchased in Australia late last season. Gay Chou ■ has been entered for the Flying Handi- : cap, six furlongs (says '"Carbine"). The horse, accompanied by another of Mr. Devon's purchases, arrived here in Mav, and is being trained at Masterton liv L Ashley Jenkins, who won the Grand National Steeplechase last month on I larion Call, (jay Chou is seven years old. His dam, Chouette, is a Magpie marc. He has some creditable performances in Australia. He won the Rous Handicap (seven furlongs), a Flying Welter at Kensington, the Dooinben Newmarket Handicap (six furlongs) and the C'ampbclltown Handicap at Warwick Farm.. He was fairly well fancied for the A ust i'ii lia 11 .Tockev Club Kpsom Handicap, and finished'sixth. His la>t win in Australia seems to have Wen ill tile hoclidale Mile at Moorefield, carrving J».2. ami rulining the distance in 1.42. Tlie time is \ cry ordinary, but the mile <<mi>e at Monretield docs not ap]>eaf to be fast, liav I lion had been purchased by Mr. Devon before the race at Mooreticld. A perusal of (iay Chou's form slluyests that he should lie an acceptable addit ion to the ranks of our handicap horses. NOT FOR WANGANUI. It is stated that M ild Talk and Keen Sight. two of Sir Charles Clifford's team, will not fulfil their engagement*) at Wanganui. JOCKEY RETURNS. H. Wig; iins, who has been on a trip to America, returned to Auckland yesterday by the Monterey. He will resume riding at the Wanganui meeting. SON OF MONANUI. The yearling colt by Diatomous from Monanui has had the name Cillas claimed for him. This youngster is stated to be a particularly fine type and his owner, Mr. J. Hoey, is very hopeful that he will turn out well. A GOOD START. The ex-New Zeaiander J. Fryer finished sixth in the winning trainers' list in Victoria. During the season (his first in Australia) he saddled up 26 winners for .stake money totalling £10,058. F. W. Hoysted headed the list with 28 winners. LIKELY-LOOKING NOVICE. The latest addition to R. W. Lewis' team is Hackenschmidt, a three-year-old brown gelding by The Ace from Precision, by Quin Abbey from Precise. The newcomer is a powerfully-built gelding, and Although he is still very much on the >?green? side he look* the part. Later on more is likely to be beard of this novice. LEFT AT RICCARTON. The Hawke's Bay-owned gelding Gironde was left at Riccarton after racing at the Grand National meeting. He was offered for sale during the meeting, but bidding was below; the reserve. He has been placed under the care of P. McGrath, who will prepare him for the Ashburton and Geraldine meetings. BEATEN BY GOOD HORSE& Since racing at the Pakuranga meeting Valmint ftaa not been overtaxed, as he will not race again until the Avondale meeting. Although beaten in the Jellicoe Handicap, the chestnut gelding ran a solid race, for the three horses that finuned in front of him are proved performers. A. win for Valmint is overdue, and he may make a return to the winning list before the season is much further advanced. MAKING GOOD PROGRESS. The many friends of Mr. G. L. Stead, who met with serious injuries to his back through a motor car in-* which he was travelling overturning while prooeedii* to Matamata on July 23 last, will be pleased toknow that he is making excellent progress. During the week he was able to get up, and, with assistance, walk a few yards. He hopes to be about again shortly. V; • EXPERIENCE WILL BE USEFUL. On se fetal occasions recently Dark j Legion has: been given barrier practice 1 on the two-year-old track at BUerslie, acquitting himself in satkfactory style each time. > Recently in company' with another horse, Dark Legion jumped out very for a beginner, and the experience will be an advantage to him when his racing career begins. AlthnngT. Dark Legion has not been seriously tested, he has shown sufficient meed on the track to indicate that he will develop into a galloper above the average. TO REAPPEAR AT AVONDALE. Gloucester, who has been off the scene for some time, is due to make his reap- 1 pearance at the Avondale meeting. : When raced previously Gloucester ; proved himself a speedy galloper, being successful on three occasions in hack events at EUefslie. He has been: shap- i ing well in litis .work at Ellerslie, bat. ] may need a race before he reveals his ; best form. ; A GOOD TRACK WORKER. For some time past Fleetwind has been responsible for attractive trials at ' Ellerslie, -though it - is over twelve months since , she won a race. In her 1 track gallops she invariably carries a 1 very light rider, and that evidently is , accountable for the fast times registered ] by the daughter of Whirlwind. As the i result of her past failures, Fleetwind has come down in the weights, and she 1 may be seen to better advantage before ' the season is much older. j AH IMPROVED JUMPER. j King Musk has derived a good deal of benefit from the schooling he has had ' over hurdles during the past few weeks, 1 and he has improved in his jumping 1 noticeably. R. S. Bagby has the Musketoon gelding well forward for the Avondale meeting, where he is engaged in both hurdle events. As King Musk has the required speed he will only need j to jump correctly in order to pay his , way over the battens. ,
