SUSTENANCE FRAUD.
LABOURER IMPRISONED. i_ Appearing on summons in the Police Court yesterday. Frank Wilson pleaded guilty to a charge of making a false statement to obtain benefit under the Employment Promotion Act, and another of false pretences. Mr. W. A. Black, prosecuting for the Department of Labour, said Wilson had been in receipt of sustenance from October, 1936, to September, 1937, during which time he performed permanent casual work on the wharf, earning fairly substantial wages. A total of 36 false declarations had been made by defendant, who obtained an excess of £26 17/. The false declarations extended up to September of last year, 10 having been made since the magistrate's warning in May of last year. Mr. C. R. Orr Walker imposed a fine of £27 10/ on the first charge and on the second he sentenced Wilson to 10 days' imprisonment with hard labour.
