LOXDOX, September 1.
The Italian Cabinet, says a Rome message, has issued a decree forbidding foreign Jews in Italy, Libya and Italian colonies, and ordering tliem to leave within six months or else be expelled. Naturalisation after January, 1919, is cancelled.
The decree defines a, Jew as one whose parents are of the Jewish faith, though they do not profess their religion.
Jews are panic-stricken, states the Daily Telegraph" Rome corrcs|>ondeut, at the expulsion decree. It is estimated that 10,000 arc affected. Many have resided in Italy for 20 years, and thousands have married Italian Jewesses and CJentiles.
Italians generally, welcome the decree, especially doctors, dentists and lawyers, who are relieved that some of their most successful rivals will disappear. Trades men also expect a revival of business.
Signor C.ayda, writing in "Giornale d Italia," characterises foreign Jews as racial and political exiles, and not worthy of their economic rivals. Their expulsion restores Italy's racial purity and freedom from foreign influence.
Other newspapers allege that the Jews attempted to use their monev to make war against Italy.
Ethiopia is not included in the prohibition as the Jews were expelled after the war.
The "Daily Telegraph" Rome correspondent says the Cabinet-created Superior Council for the increase of purity of the Italian race has decided to intensify maternity and child welfare institutions.
The council further decreed that a i bachelor of 30 employed in the civil service should not be promotable if a married man of 26 was due for promotion. Private firms and semi-State institutions must introduce similar measures. Women employees of the State must be reduced to 10 per cent.
