CATHOLICS IN AUSTRIA. (Received 1.30 p.m.) VIENNA, September 1. Catholic schools in Austria are forbidden to reopen at the beginning of the new term oil September 19. Registered trade unions in Britain now have a bigger membership than ever before in the history of the movement, and the funds, which have doubled in the past 10 years, now exceed £18,000,000. At the end of 1937, according to the annual returns of trade unions, there were 433 registered unions, numerically the smallest total since 1927 by reason of amalgamations, but the total membership was 4,695,065, the highest figure on record.
