GOOD SPRINTS.
GUINEAS CANDIDATES. TAXJIRANGI AND HOMILY. BOTH IX GOOD ORDER. (Special to " Star.") WANGANUI, Thursday. As a result of heavy showers overnight the going on the course proper, which was used for training operations this morning, was holding. The weather was fine, but nothing of particular note was done. D. A. Marks came in from Fordell with a team of four —Russian Ballet, Taurangi, Red Cat and Ruatiti. Morning Flight put in useful work before breakfast, while the first to appear after the interval were Submission (F. Latham) anil Portal, with his trainer (W. Rayner) in the saddle. They sprinted three furlongs, but were not asked to do their best, the time being 39 2-ss. Submission going along very nicely.
Rehearsal (W. Rayner) and Minga (F. Latham l were associated in a half-mile spin. They ran the first two furlongs in 275, and the full distance in 545, both going comfortably.
Homilv iiml Coronation were associated in a spin over half a mile, but they were 'i ""H "11 the way, taking 55%5. Homily was liitting out freely and was tiixums to increase the pace.
Francis Drake, who is evidently well forward, slipped over halt' a mile by himself in 535, time which he couid Uave improved upon. The two-year-olds Kobi and Authoress hopped off together at the three-furlong post, and ran the distance very comfortably in 41 l-ss. Authoress continues to get through her tasks in pleasing style, and although not yet seriously tried shows a fair amount of promise. Kobi is a very strong looking colt, and this son of Bulandstar is likely to prove a speedyyoungster. Taurangi went six furlongs by herself in 1.20 2-3. The Besru Pere filly was very wide out, and was going well within herself over the last two furlongs. She looks to be more forward than some of the Beau Pere three-year-olds. Russian Ballet also looks to be ready to run out a fast mile. She went six furlongs by herself, skipping over the first quarter in 24 2-ss, three furlongs in 37 4-ss, and the half-mile in 51 1-5, to finish up in 1.20 4-5. She was going well within herself. Russian Ballet was not so wide out as Taurangi, and, like the latter, was barefooted. Red Cat jumped off at the five-furlong post, and ran the first three in 40s, but was then allowed to loaf, finishing up in 1.7%. Golden Pam put in a circuit at good three-quarter pace, and Amatory was given a similar task. Ruatiti, the full-brother to Porotiti, was to have run three furlongs, but after showing early speed he was eased up and allowed to canter home. I
IN THE CHIEF EVENTS.
Nothing of a serious nature has been asked of Knight of Australia since he contested the Jellicoe Handicap, but he is thriving on the work allotted him. This galloper is engaged in both the principal handicap events at Avondale and will be a fit horse by the time that meeting takes place. Knight of Australia has previously raced well on the suburban course and will have to be considered at the approaching meeting.
