Several Surprises At Taranaki

GLENVANE TAKES HUNT CUP. Alyth the Hack Sprint - Racing at New Plymouth.

Heavy Going. Annoyer Scores Easily. * I hough the weather was fine, the going w:u voi v ho.-ivj- for the opening of the » on■ 1 >• nr--1 Etrmont-Wanganui and Tara-v.-'x' TT'mt meeting yesterday (says our \c' - !'] mouth convspondenO and in conscrirrv " si'ino of the fancied candidates wr: • i:*i |!i! • t . hiindl? it. However, some inter. -itii'ji rating w is provided and there v pre tln ee close finishes. During the day the sum of £ 11 069 10' was put through the machine for eight races, as compared with seven last year, an increase of £261 10'. Taking charge five flirlongs from home, Annoyer scored a hollow victory in the Trial Steeples, winning by six lengths from Nino Maitini. who made up a lot of ground over the list round. Annoyer w.is always one of the leaders with Sir Acre over the first part and then he had Lady Callnghan disputing the lead with him, with Cvnkal S>.iile always handy. Once Annoyer took sole charge nothing looked like catching, him, though Nino Mitir.i bent the rest without trouble. Cynical Smil? wai a moderate fourth, just ah id of Lady Callaghan and Sir Acre. Though awkwardly placed for most of the way Loid Cavendish finished splendidly in the straight to beat C'orato by a he id on the post in the first divisional tho Werproa Strikes. Kokako was the early , leader and was well clear of Corato at the straight entrance, but ran off the conn e. Corato had Rolling Home beaten at the distance, but Lord Cavendish finished too well. Rolling Home was a good third, a head in front of Windsor Chief, who was pocketed in the straight when making a great 'run from the back. Outclassed Opposition. St. Cedric and Eurotas outclassed the opposition in the second division of the Weroroa Stakes. St. Cedric eoon took charge from Eurotas and the pair were always a long way clear of the rest. St. Cedric, handling the heavy going well, easily held Eurotas at bay in the straight, Eurotas floundering in the going. Narrator finished well and beat Car Leaf for third. The rest were well back. Gold Ballad won the Whenuakura Hack ('up narrowly, but, . impressively. He . drew the outside position at the start and had to be ridden hard'tb'take the lead after two furlongs, but displayed gameiiesn when challenged in the straight. , Massing the half mile Gold Ballad was just showing.the way.to Ohanga, ShangriLa and High Sea, with' Sly Fox moving up oh the outside. Sly Fox and Gold llaHad led into.the straight, followed by .Shangri-La and High Sea. Sly Fox was soon done with, but High Sea challenged ' and Auto Sweep came fast. In a good finish Gold Ballad held off High Sea by a head, with Auto Sweep a neck away, followed by Iddo and Sly Fox. Glenvane won the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup in easy style from his stablemate, Red Mint, but his task was made more easy by the favourite Hirangi losing his rider when going well half a mile from home. Booklaw led for a round, with Habntini and Glenvane' bandy, but the field was bunched jumping the double the second time. Sabatini then ran to the front, follqwed by Glenvane, with Hirangi moving up fast.' Hirangi lost his rider at the fence by the half mile and Glenvane took charge, going on: to beat Red Mint by four lengths, with' Sabatini 10 lengths away. Booklaw was the only other to finish. Gay Mqid refused to start and Flower Bug was pulled up* after going a mile. .. v A FIM Ran. Coming with a fine run in the straight Clessamor got up to beat Prince Acre in the Wailiau . Handicap. ■' Pakanui and Prince Acre were the early leaders, but Light Comedy went up fsst to take charge at the far. bend. She ran wide at the straight entrance, leaving Prince Acre and Pakanui in front, and just as this pair were having a great rattle Clessamor flashed up to win by a neck. Princis Acre was a head in front of Pakanui, with Light Comedy fourth. Then came Jazz Boy, Mungakaha and Amigo. Amigo, who was favourite", was always about the middle of the field. Red Rufus won the Bracelet after being capably ridden. He took charge at the five furlong"), but was soon joined by Te Huia and Salon, and the trfo raced in line down the back. Te Huia led into the straight, but ran wide, leaving' Red Rufus'

to conie through to win by a length. Salon was a good third, well clear of Umpire. Alyth won the Waverley Hack Handicap easily. She had moved into second place before the straight was reached and then soon placed the issue beyond doubt, winning by four lengths. Hunter's Eve made the pace and racing out of the back Alyth, Milanion and Proclamation were her nearest attendants. The order was practically the same into the straight, where Alyth ran away. Le Toquet finished solidly to beat Proclamation for second, with Dark Eagle running on fast in fourth place. Milanion had to cover extra ground.
