PAY CM PUBLIC WORKS. DAY \YA<; l-:s EMPLOYEES. (By Teleptrapli.—Own Correspondent.) CHI?ISTCHLTU'H. this day. Advice that day wage.s men employed by the Public Works Department were to lie paid on a wet or dry basis as from July 11 has been received from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Scinple. by the Mayor, Mr. R. Macfarlane. The advice was contained in a reply to a letter Mr. Macfarlana sent to the Minister following representations made to him by some of the men engaged on tlie South Island Main Trunk job. The Mayor said that he had received a petition from the men in the Hundalce camp setting out their position, and he had forwarded the information to the Minister. "Regarding the workmen at Xo. o camp. Hundalee. Conway."' read the Minister's reply. "1 have to advise that day wages men in the employ of the Public Works and other Departments of State. whoSe rates of pay are not in excess of 2/3 an hour, are to be paid on a wet 1 or drv basis as from Julv 11." I

Referring to a complaint by the men concerning firing, the Minister added that he was taking that matter up with the C'hristchurch office of hie Department.
