BIG DROP IN SHARES.
Capital Value of British Suez Canal Holdings. DUE TO FALL OF FRANC. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 31. The fall in the value of the French franc has resulted in a decline of over £32,000,000 iu the capital value of the British Government holdings of Suez Canal shares in the past year. TO TRY AGAIN. COBB'S FIRST RUNS FAIL. (Received 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 31. In an attempt at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, yesterday, upon the land speed record of 345.49 miles an hour established last Saturday by Captain G. E. T. Eyston, the British driver, Mr.' John Cobb, reached a speed estimated at 300 miles an hour on his first run, and in a second attempt about 325 miles an hour. The conditions were not favourable. Mr. Cobb will make another attempt at the record on Saturday. COMMISSION LEAVES. EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS. | RUGBV, August 31. Field-Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode, Colonel li. A. Hay and Mr. H. C. Dick, the members of the commission for the exchange of prisoners in Spain, have left London to take up their duties at Toulouse, France, which is to be their headquarters. '
