COUNCIL'S ANNUAL MEETING

TEACHERS FROM, OVERSEAS? (By Telegraph.—Press" Association.) THE HERMITAGE, Wednesday. • Unsettled weather at Mount Cook, with intermittent falls of snow, made-it necessary to alter the New Zealand ski championship programme to-day. The downhill races will be decided to-morrow morning. At the annual meeting of the Ski Council of the federated Mountain Clubs Mr. *. H. Drewitt presided. He referred to the success of the visit of the American ski team last season. The visit had stimulated ski-ing in New Zealand and the high standard shown in this year's championship was due to it in a larite measure. b The ski council was asked to go into the question of having two prominent ■jumping hills, one at Mount Cook and one at Mount Ruapehu. ~%lt was agreed to hold the ski chainpiouehips for 1939 at Mount Ruapehu. The election of mem bens of the ski council resulted in the appointment of Messrs F. H. Drewitt (Tasnian Ski Club),' d » X* erner (Christclmrch Ski Club)) ■K» B. Gray (Tararua Tramping .Club), B. E. Murphy (Ruapehu Ski Club), and H. Snowden (Ruapehu Ski Club). Applications for employment as ski-ing instructors had been received from a number of overseas ski teachers, it was reported. The council decided to write to the various eki. clubs to obtuiu their opinions regarding the employing of one of these men as a permanent ski instructor.

A motion from the Mount Egmont alpme Club for the elimination of the telemark and. jump turns from the thirdclaw ski testa, was defeated. .

BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. E. J. Osborne, presiding. Sewerage Works.—lt was decided to inform the medical officer of health, Dr. T. J. Hughes, that the flow and pressure of water was adequate for the purpose of the sewerage system for properties in Queen Street. A progress payment of £84 was passed in connection with No 4 sewerage contract. The engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, reported that continued wet weather had very considerably delayed operations on the pumping station in Marania Terrace. The total value of work done on No. 3 contract was £7731 17/9 out of the.total of £7980 9/. Gospel Hall Frontage.—A donation of £10 was received from Mr. R. E. Stott on behalf of the Gospel Hall trustees, towards thr•repair of the footpath fronting the building. High Sciiool.— The Northcote District High School Committee wrote thanking the council for the gift of trees, which had been planted m the grounds on Arbor Day, and expressing appreciation of tile fostering by the council of arboculture and freely distributing -its trees.
