LIMIT ON SPEED.

DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL. (Prom Our Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Attention was paid to speed and alcohol at the quarterly meeting of the New Zealand Road Safety Council yesterday. The council decided that publicity should be given to the danger and cost of high, motor speeds. Mr. H. W. Milner, of the New Zealand Alliance, advocated a universal speed limit throughout New Zealand, and suggested, that insurance companies should be invited to grant rebatee to non-drinking drivers. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, suggested that the maximum, speed limit be fixed at 60 miles an hour. The Commissioner of Transport, Mr, G. L. Laurenson, said the experience was that accidents in rural areas without the. limit were very much more deadly than accidents in urban areas. The proposal that there be a maximum speed limit on rural roads was not adopted. Mr. C. Spratt said that a declaration by insurance companies that they would grant a 10 per cent rebate to total abstainers would have a very salutary effect on public opinion. It .was decided 4o investigate the question of insurance premiums with reference to physical conditions and immunity from accident*.
