THREATS IGNORED

TRAMWAYS DISPUTE.

DEMANDS BY EMPLOYEES.

STATEMENT bt mayor.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

Friction has existed between the Wellington Tramways Union and the Disputes Committee recently over matters which pre not disclosed. The award provides for disputes to be settled by a disputes committee consisting of representatives appointed by employees and employers (the City Council) with a chairman agreed upon bv them.

The union now wishes to meet the tramways committee regarding the matters in dispute, and unless this is agreed to before Monday, certain threats are made.

Seen to-day, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that in view of the statements published he was not authorised to make any further statement than one to the effect that the committee had arranged to meet representatives of the union at its next meeting. He explained that owing, to an exceptionally lonjr order paper-it was not possible to consider adequately many matters referred to in the letter fiom the secretary of the union, and consideration was deferred to the following meeting, the letter and

the award meanwhile to be circulated among members, with the manager's comments thereon.

The committee would therefore deal with the matters at the next ordinary meeting on September 12, at which representatives of the union would have an opportunity of appearing, said the Mayor. He had. since received a letter from the union secretary containing certain threats. On receipt of this he had asked members of the committee to meet him, and they had unanimously supported him in the attitude that they were not jjoing to be influenced by threats or ultimatums. Representatives of the union would receive full and fair consideration at the meeting already

arranged,
