GAY CAVALIER FALLS

A POPULAR VICTORY.

FLOODLIGHT IN FORM. WINS RUNNING AWAT. From a jumping point of view tlie Greenmount Hunters' Steeplccliase, with which the programme o]»ened, was anything but brilliant, the winner, Pyrenees, making several mistakes until the last seven furlongs were entered upon. He then settled down, and took the remaining obstacles well. The favourite, Gay Cavalier, when in front at the double, did not seem to see the fence, and came to grief. Mana ran off at this fence, but was taken back and completed the course, to finish fourth. Kittle, who lias not had much experience, gave the best display of the lot, and should develop into a useful 'chaser. When the field settled down. Gay Cavalier was in charge from Ika, Tane Mahotu, Pyrenees, liana and Kittle. Pyrenees ran up to Gav Cavalier when they reoched the top of the hill, but almost refused at the first fence. However, he got over and was with Gay Cavalier before the double was reached. The latter fell there, and Pyrenees also jumped badly, Mana running off. Along the bock Ika and Pyrenees were about two lengths in front of Kittle, with Tane Mahotu about 12 lengths further back. The lastnamed nearly fell at the stone wall. Kittle led up the hill the last time, a couple of lengths in front of Ika, with a similar gap to Pyrenees, and Tane Mahotu tailed off. Kittle and Pryenees had the race to themselves when Unreached the flat again, and, in the run home from the last fence, Pyrenees outstayed Kittle to win by three lengths. Ika was eight lengths further back, with a big gap to Tane Mahotu, with Mana well last.

On the Bit. Floodlight was a good favourite for the Harris Memorial Hurdles an<f the support was justified, as he took charge about five furlongs from home and won pulling up. It was his first success as a jumper and he is likely to do a good deal better. Bass, also well supported, had every cliance, but was done with half way through the race. Flash Bv and Hopalong both ran creditable Atta Jack lost ground at the start, the early leaders being British Banner, Bass Hopalong and La tour's Last. Paunui fe " "J the firs . t fence in the straight and Bass ran it down badly. When straightened up, he led past' the stand from Hopalong. Car L*af, Golden Spahi and British Banner. Unusual Performance. The Sylvia Park Handicap was run in divisions, and the Hamilton owner, Mr. . : Rei d. put up an unusual feat bv winning both of them. In the first, n ;,?l7 lpU !i. SO ? n - to °k char ? e and won icely, this being his first success. In the second division, J an Ridd was quickly in the lead and, stalling off rrontino, won comfortably. Gold Petal and Olympus were the first to show out in the first division, but Olympus soon took command and, passL ng r. VV ' nd and wen t on to beat Paddy The Rip by three-quarters of a length, with Valdene a length awav * J S^ rathire was four th. just ahead of Gold Eagle. Then came Rajanva and l'enzance.

In the second division, Jan Ridd and Tupeoto were soon in command and, across the top, the order was Jan Ridd, Frontino, High Star, Oriental Bay, Hunting Law and Spearford. Jan Ridd was first into line from Frontino, High Star, Spearford, Oriental Bay and HuntLaw* Though strongly challenged, Jan Ridd stayed on to beat Frontino bv half a length, with Hunting Law two lengths and a half awav. S|>earford Oriental Bay, High Star and Javola were the next to finish.

Phenomenal Ran. The Jellicoe Handicap produced a ver v fine finish, the top weight, Flood Tide, putting in a great run over the concluding stage to just get up and win narrowly from Kilon£a. The latter was always in the picture and seemed to have the opposition beaten until Flood Tide just caught her on the post. Roval Bachelor tried to win all the wav. but weakened over the last bit. As this

was his • first race of tlie season, lie should improve quickly. Orac and Royal Bachelor were the first to become prominent, while Armacourt was slow away.- Royal Bachelor was in front along'the back, followed by Prince Acre, Valmint and Kena. Passing the fodr furlongs post, Royal Bachelor was clear from Valmint and Prince Acre, who were together, jnst ahead of Kilonsa, Kena, Day Wind and Enge. Royal Bachelor was the first to straighten up" for home from Valmint, Prince Acre, Kena, Kilonsa, Day Wind and Flood Tide, who. had come from a long way back.x Kilonsa then ranged alongside Royal Bachelor, while Valmint made an effort on the rails. Fifty yards from the post, Kilonsa was in front, but Flood Tide came with a-, phenomenal run to beat her "by half & head. Royal Bachelor was half a length away third, with Valmint, Horowhenna, Gay Rebel. Prince Acre, Knight ot Australia, Brown Lap and Day Wind next. , Results were:— GREEN MOUNT HUNTERS' .STEEPLECHASE of £900.
