DAVIS GUP HIGHLIGHT.
AMERICAN ZONE FJNAL AUSTRALIAN CAPTAIN'S TACTICS. MONTREAL, August 15. The Australian Davis Cup captain, H. O. Hopman, stated a bruise had developed in an inner thigh of Bromwich after his rubber with Yamagishi on Friday, when Hhe Japanese won by 3 win to 1. This did not lend itself ito massaging and was kept a close secret from the Japanese players, since if Yamagishi had defeated Quiat and the tie hung on the NakanoBromwich rubber, the Japanese might have adopted continuous drop-shot tactics, which would quickly have incapacitated Bromwich. As the match had been decided after Quist'e second singles victory, and Bromwich was obviously in trouble after hie first set, the teams had actually decided to abandon hie contest with Nakano and stage a doubles exhibition instead. Bromwich, however, felt better and preferred to continue his singles. Hopman believes the Lruise will disappear before the German match at Boston. "It was no use allowing Bromwich to kill himself, as the rubber did not mean anything," declared Hopman, when asked for ihis reason in stopping the play. "Nakano obviously could have gone on indefinitely, while we want 'Bromy , for Boston.' "
The All Blacks sailed by the Awatea for Wellington at 5.50 p-m. to-day. The Maori choir also sailed by the vessel. In a farewell interview before the departure of the All Blacks, the manager, Mr. McDonald, eaid the tour had been a phenomenal success, and should dispel the pessimistic view-in New Zealand that the Dominion's Rugby was on the down grade. "I have no hesitation in saying that with the material we have and the young players coming on, we diall be well able to hold our own on the South African tour in 1940." said Mr. McDonald. "I thank the people of Australia, who. during this to»r, have broken the record for hospitality." Dr. Adams said Australian Rugby was well up to international standard. It had been teeted by one of the best teams that ever left New Zealand.
