AMES A CENTURY.
KENT V. AUSTRALIA.
WOOLLEY'S HECTIC FINALE,
FAGG TWICE OUT CHEAPLY.
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, August 15. In thn cricket match at Canterbury Kent cnuld make only 108 in response to Au.-itntli.i's 4TSJ. Following on, the county did much better, running up 265 for four wiikettt. There are, however, still 106 runs required to save* an innings' defeat. Highlights of the second day's play were a memorable farewell innings by Woolley. on the pitch on which he has played so many great knocks, and a century by Ames —a welcome return to the arena after the injury England's wicketkeeper sustained in the Lord's Test. Fagg, called up for the final Test at the Oval thin week after his record-breaking achievements in July, was twice dismissed for an UKgri'gnte of 25 runs. Instead nf declaring at Saturday's total of 400 for eight wickete Bradman gave hie tail-enders an opportunity of batting practice in pleasant conditions. White (36) and Wnrd (3) continued in merry way. Tlie former showed hie ability by topping *■ tlie half century, his highest score in England. He hit nine fours. Hopes of a characteristic innings from Woolley were shattered first ball, from which he was run out. This was due to the 'keeper Walker going smartly down the pitch and throwing the wicket down at the bowler's end. Waite introduced a leg trap, to which he bowled oli'-spinners. He had all but Ames in trouble, resulting in wickets falling rapidly. Five were down within an hour and the score was 57 at the lunch adjournment. Wright and Levett added 31 for the last wicket, the best partnership of the innings, which closed after 130 minutes. It wae a deplorable display, considering Kent's reputation. Kent followed on at 3.25 p.m. Woolley immediately indulged in glorious bitting and reached 50 in 35 minutes. Fagg meanwhile made only seven. He was stuinped soon afterwards. Woolley on-drove Ward for a six, but eventually was caught at deep mid-on. The Australians joined in the crowd's ovation of a memorable innings. It waa a fitting farewell to Canterbury, where he had given so many great displays. He batted only 66 minutes and hit a sixer and 14 fours. He scored 81 out of 99 runs from the bat while he wae in. Woolley'e onslaught sufficiently disrupted the Australian attack to give the others confidence. Valentine hit Ward for two sixers in the same over. Ames hooked Waite over the fence and drove White for a eix. The bowlers were tiring, and Ames and Valentine added 95 in 45 minutes. The English wicketkeeper was in top form. He again drove White for six and hit all the, bowler* fiercely to. reach- the century in 100 minutes. It was only the second hundred of the tour against Australia outside the Teeie. Amee at stamps had hit three sixes and 11 fours. The Kent innings thus far- ham lasted 165 minutes, an exceptional rate of scoring against Australia:— .
