MISS RUTH DRAPER.
SIMPLICITY PERSONIFIED.
DELIGHTFUL SKETCHES. The famous American artist, Miss Ruth Draper, made her first appearance in Auckland at His Majesty'e Theatre last evening, when .the auditorium was filled with many well known citizens. With simply a hat, a ebawl, a coat or a negligee, as the character required, and worn over a rich brown mirror velvet gown cut on the simplest lines of modern fashions, Mise Draper gave a startling impression of the personality she wae portraying. In the sketch of an old lady of social distinction opening a bazaar, Miss Draper wore a 6hady hat of biscuit straw surmounted with flowers. She carried a parasol and around, her shoulders wae a feather boa which she used with compelling artistry to convey perfect comedy. As the Irish peasant woman the only addition to the frock was a black cashmere ehawi around the shoulders and held in front. In "Three Breakfasts" a cardigan of bright colours was first worn over the velvet gown. This was followed by a velvet morning negligee trimmed with lace and for the last "breakfast," when portraying the grandmother, a small woollen shawl was worn. In the Italian church scene when various people who entered the church were portrayed, spectacles, an artist's smock, an American tourist's dustcoat were all used in different roles, and particularly charming was the. draping of a black lace scarf which was used for the young girl meeting her lover. With no facial make-up, these few articles of clothing and complete genius, Mise, Draper made each of her characters a perfect cameo. One will never see a feather boa without thinking of Miss Draper's perfect old lady at the bazaar; or a red rose without remembering the pulsating little girl in a church in Italy.
