IN TWO YEARS ' TIME.
AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES. EXTENSION TO MANURE-WA. At the meeting of the Manurewa Borough Council last. evening a letter was received from the District Kngineer of Post Offices acknowledging a request for an automatic exchange at Manurewa. The letter stated that while the work involved was of great magnitude and the Department found it economical to install automatic exchanges in certain outer areas, namely, Mount Alhert, Avondale, St. Helier's and Otahuhu, the question of securing material was a problem. The provision of an automatic exchange would extend southwards the operations by eome miles and it was not unlikely that the area would reach Manurewa by that means. The engineer pointed out, however, that the rates then would be higher as a consequence. It was also mentioned that the switchboard necessary for the job had not yet been ordered, but the work should be through in. two years' time.
