Luke to abolish the riding system of finance, under which the county now operates. Under the present system the county ■was just an aggregation of road boards, taid Mr. Luke, and the. county was trying to cope with modern traffic under an obsolete system. In some ways the system approached. absurdity.
'■: , Many roads would need modernising in the near future, said Mr. B. T. Booker, who seconded the motion, and thin would need the co-operation of the whole country. Mr. Trayee warned the council that, if the I motion succeeded, he was sure the Mangere riding would take steps to break away from the county and form a separate borough. Although abolition of ridings would bring simplification of •, office control, it would mean increased rates for the Mangere riding, said Mr. Trayes. The inequality of the valuation of the county would be the great difficulty - in getting the scheme to function properly, said the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, who voted against the motion. m Messrs.
