PAPATOETOE LOCAL AFFAIRS.
For some considerable time Papatoetoe has had sufficient population to allow its rising from the status of a town to that of a borough, and, in my opinion, the opportunity offered six weeks ago for the purpose should certainly have been seized. The disadvantages of the past are to continue, and msuiy likely dwellers will be induced to settle in other boroughs with more modern amenities. The district as a residential one is really good, but when * likely resident comes along and inquires as to sewerage, etc., and finds we are still a town with obsolete ideas, he goes further afield, and neighbouring boroughs are only too pleased to welcome him. To have sewerage we must have taxes, but as the owner of one section I would •be pleased to pay 20/ or 30/ more in taxes and have the town raised to the standard of a borough, with all modern requirements. I lam sure if the change were made many more ihouses would be built, and the demand for sections would be much greater than now. The Town Board, too. or possibly its successors, would be well advised to consider having numbers for all building sections, and some of the streets, roads or avenues renamed. In some cases one street has a name for each end, and this is confusing to visitors. Surely it is time also that roads should disappear and avenues take their places. St. Patrick's Parade, St. Andrew's Avenue. St. David's Square or Octagon, etc., and a few more, would be, I think, a decided improvement. CI VIS.
