HELIUM IN BRAZIL?

Scientist's Claim of Discovery

Not Verified.

SIGNIFICANCE TO GERMANY.

NEW YORK, July 17. Helium gas has been found in the last few months in Sao Paulo province, according to a statement by Dr. Basto Alves, director of Brazil's geographic and geological department, eays the correspondent of the "New York *Times" at Rio de Janeiro. "A German scientist who has been investigating helium sources here declared their existence, but it has not been verified."

The discovery is particularly significant to Germany in view of the United States' refusal to export helium, which is replacing other gases in airships, and the frequent allegation by members of the United States Congress and by statesmen that the European dictatorships were dangerously active in penetrating South America by means of propaganda.
