HOPES DASHED.
"AMBERGRIS" FIND. IDENTIFIED AS TALLOW. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCfi, this day. Hopes raised by the discovery of a substance thought to be ambergrie, on Blaketown Beach, Greymouth, were dashed when it was found to be merely tallow, or beeswax, affected by salt water. The "ambergris," weighing 111b B,}oz, was discovered by Mrs. Fagerlund, of Guinness Street, who sent it to Christchurch for identification. Mr. R. A. Falla, curator at the Canterbury Museum, identified the substance as cither tallow or beeswax, more probably the former.
It ie difficult to estimate what the find would have been worth had it been ambergris. The price varies greatly, from a few shillings to several pounds an ounce, according to what stocks scent manufacturers have in hand. The discovery of a large lump will affect the market adversely for a considerable time.
