MENTAL HOSPITAL INMATE.

ATTENDANT IS CHARGED.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, this day.

At the instigation of the DirectorGeneral of Health, Bruce Mofifat Jordan (26), mental hospital attendant, was charged in the Police Court with striking a patient at Seacliffe on DeceniJber 9 last. Accused pleaded not guilty. Mr. Deaker, for the prosecution, stated that on the date named a patient struck the accused, breaking his denture. Later in the evening tbe accused was seen to enter the patient's room, and next morning the patient was suffering from a broken jaw.

The State's responsibility to protect patients was very great, for if it did not accord protection relatives would be very uneasy. Fortunately this type of offence was uncommon, but when it waa alleged to occur the State's duty was clear, Mr. Deaker added.

It was impossible to get a statement from the patient, and one attendant who was to give evidence had since died.

The case was adjourned until Monday.
