BOAT HARBOUR.
AREA OFF ORAKEI.
RESIDENTS' MISGIVINGS.
AT SITE.
For the purpose of discussing the Orakei boat harbour scheme, members of the Auckland Harbour Board, and officials of the board, will meet residents of Orakei, at Orakei, next Tuesday morning to explain the proposal. The chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. W. B. Darlow, eaid this morning that he was sure that when the proposal had been «£P' ain ~ on the spit any misgivings that the residents had would be removed. "The boat harbour scheme at Orakei not Intend to despoil the beauty of the harbour, but it had to be realised that there was a growing demand for certain amenities, and the people of Auckland looked to the Auckland Harbour Board to provide them. The board had been accused on different occasions of interfering with Nature. Even to build. wharves was to interfere with Mature, but were it not for the fact that Auckland had modern wharves vessels'like the Empress of Britain and other big linere would not come here. Mr. Darlow pointed out that the Auckland pleasure craft had been conserve-' tivcly valued at £400,000, and proper facilities had to be provided. St. Mary's Bay would not. in itself be sufficient to meet aquatic demands, and probably the day would come when, with even a new boat harbour completed, it would be necessary to provide more accommodation for pleasure craft. "When the Orakei proposal is fully explained, ,, concluded Mr. Darlow, "I think there will be very little ground for objections."
