SHIELD HOCKEY.

POVERTY BAY VISIT.

CHALLENGE TO AUCKLAND.

BEATEN BY ODD GOAL UtST YEAR. Auckland will be called upon to defend the New Zealand Challenge Shield at Remuera to-morrow afternoon against a strong Poverty Bay side. This will be the visitors' sixth attempt tc lift the trophy, and last year they made a bold bid for it, losing by only the odd goal in nine. Five members of this team were here last year and four of the rema-nder have played in shield matches; the jther two are new to representative hockey. ' Coker, the custodian, has a reputation for brilliant clearances. The full-backs are sound in defensive play, utilising powerful but well directed hits to repulse the attacks. The half line is the same as that which played in the trial match at Xapier when Poverty Bay beat Hawke's Bay by four goals to nil. Nicol and Lowe were here laet year, and the latter in the centre position was the pick of the line. Watchman, who has been chosen for the right wing position for the first Test against the Indians, will be playing as centre forward, and he will be remembered for hie dashing game here laet year. Slade is another forward who was here laet year, and hie clever etickwork and j good eye for an opening will make this combination dangeroue. McLean is the third member of the vanguard who is making his reappearance here, while the two players on the right flank will be playing out of position, but are expected to put up a good showing. Auckland will be fielding the name team as in the Waikato trial game, with the exception of Clark, who ie not available on account of a knee injury, ami Monteith. Hoglien, who has just returned from the inter-tlnivereity tournament, where ha gained honours in the match against th_* Prince of Manavadar'e Indian team, will replace Clark, and Rowe, the Mount Eden and ex-Wellington player, will take Monteith'e place. The fourth round of the Devonport Shield will also be decided, University and Grammar Old Boye playing the curtainraiser on No. 1 ground. On No. 2 ground the early match will be between Mount Eden and United, and in the 3 o'clock game Somerville will meet St. Luke's. The teams are:— Auckland.—M. Wattam, H. Jones, L. Hogben, C.
