SPEED-AND' STILL MORE SPEED.
AMERICAN COMPARISONS. In these days of speed, when records are made only to be broken, the following question frequently arises: What has been its effect on trotting? And. when speaking of trotting recorde of a world's (standard, one instinctively turns to the United States (or information. Having done so just the other day, we find, upon selecting the leading record members of the various divisions in 1927 and having stacked them up against those recorded in both divisions—trotting and pacing—just a decade later—in 1937, to be exact —that the comparison is of more than passing interest. < In 1927 the following were the champions in their respective classes:— Trotters, 1927. 2jts— Fireglow, 2.4. 3yre—Kashmir, 2.3%. 4yrs—Guy McKinney, 1.58%. oyns—Sam Williams, 2.2%. Aged—Peter Manning, 2.034. Race record—Hazelton, ■ 2.1%. Stallion—Guy McKinney, 1.58%. Mare—Etta Druien—Kahla Dillon, 2.2%. Gelding—Peter Manning, 2.0%. Half-mile track—Peter Manning, 2.2%. Xew performer—Kashmir, 2.3%. Trotters, 1937. 2yrs—Dale Hanover, 2.3%. 3yrs—Dean Hanover, Lsß%. 4yra—Rosalind—Margaret Caetleton, 1.59%, oyre—Greyhound, 1.56. Aged—Lee Hanover,' 2.0. Gelding- Buddy Maxey, 1.59%. Half-mile track—Earl West—Hollywav,2.1%. New performer—Nate Hanover, 2.2%. All of the members of that 1927 record list, but one, have retired from the racing scene. Red Pluto, 2, 2.5%, winner of the inaugural Fox Pacing Stake at Indianapolis, ie etill kicking around at the outposte of racing, and his name pope up frequently even yet in the winter meetings in northern England and at some of fche obscure fairs of that section, where he and several other stars of a. past decade are etill on the go. Of the others, 12 have retired to the breeding ranks with Guy McKinney, 4, 1.58%, the biggest success to date, for he is sending out sons and daughters who are winning over mile and half-mile tracks from coast to coast. Kireglow did not survive the three-year-old campaign, and the remaining three, all geldings, Peter Manning, Sir Roche and Kinney Direct, are now retired to a well-earned life of ease.
