BIG CHRISTCHURCH FIRE^

XO REFLECTION OK MEN.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.

An assurance was given to the men of the Christchurch Fire Brigade at a meeting of the board that no reflection on them was intended in the statement issued by the chairman, Mr. T. M. Charters, after the fire in the city on May 23.

A motion by the Hon. J. K. Archer, M.L.C. —"That this board disapproves of the statement published by the chairman on May 24 and repeated on May because it is contrary to fact, damages the reputation of our brigade and is a grave and unjustifiable reflection on the conduct of our firemen"—was rejected after a long discussion. A full report is to be prepared for the board on the possibility of engaging an adequate number of -auxiliary 'firemen in accordance with the recommendations made' in the report by the Inspector of Fire Brigades, Mr. R. Girling-Butdherj on the recent fire.

It has also been decided that the board should try to arrange for a "gentlemen's agreement" with the Christehurch Fire . Brigaderaen's Union that any fireman on leave and on the board's premises at the time of a fire could be required to turn out for duty
