SWEETHEART THE VICTIM.
BIRCHING ORDERED. LONDON", June 21. Seventeen-year-old Royston le Blancliard was ordered nt Jersey Police Court to receive 24 strokes of the birch, two punishments of 12 strokes each, for carving his initials, "R. 8.," on the wrist of hie sweetheart, Phyllis Joyce Lucas. Replying to the magistrate. Mr. Pinel, le o ßlanchard said lie did it with his penknife. They had known each other for two years, and he did this just for fun.
The girl told the Court that ehe did notxscreem because 9he was afraid le Blanchard might do something worse. Le Blanchard's father, who gave his consent to the birching, eaid he had had no trouble with his son. He could not understand why he ha 4 done this. The girl's father, on the other hand, described le Blanchard as a bad-tempered boy and "liable to stick a knife into anyone."
Addressing the girl, Mr. Pinel warned her to have no more to do with le Blanchard, saying, "A boy who makes love by cutting a girle' arm is no use to you or anyone else."
