NORTH SHORE WATER.

PUPUKE OR WAITAKERE?

CITY COUNCIL'S OFFER. Th© Auckland City Council's offer to •supply water to the North. Shore boroughs at 1/ per thousand gallons at the borough boundary for 21 years was considered at last evening's meeting of the Devonport Borough Council.

Mr. J. Hislop moved that the offer he declined on the grounds that in" Lake Pupuke the borough had the best water supply in New Zealand, suul if this were augmented from the Wairau Stream, which ran to waste rive million gallons yearly, there was eufiirioiit water for the requirements of the North Shore for the next 50 years.

Mr. E. Aldridge recommended that the offer be considered as a business proposition. If Waitakere water were made available in Devonpprt, it would represent an asset to the borough. The level of Lake Pupuke was now 58in sea level, having dropped 12in during the past year. Such a revision of their water supply would also remove the inequity of the rateable lands in the lake basin. The pumping returns showed that an increased consumption of four million gallons for the past quarter. To augment Pupuke from the Wairau Stream meant more than the diversion of the stream; it involved the construction of a tunnel and contingent works, as well ae the purchase of the watershed. The Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, reviewed the whole position and stated his belief that in Lake Pupuke ough controlled a reservoir holding more water than the total city supply. He supported the proposition for the full investigation of the City Council's offer. The council decided to consider all possihle aspects of the question mid to inspect Lake Pupuke and the Wairau Stream.
