REUNION DINNER AND SOCIAL.

Ypres Returned Soldiers 9 Club Function.

The Ypres Returned Soldiers’ Club held its third annual reunion dinner and social evening on Saturday night, and the function was well attended by members and friends of the club. Gailycoloured bunting and ’ flags of all nations decorated the rooms for the occasion, while bowls of African daisies, Iceland poppies and pink heather also added to the colour of the scene. Beside each lady’s place a posy of heather and violets was placed. On arrival the guests were received by Mr. Edward Thomas, the president of the club. He was assisted by Mrs. Thomas who was wearing a frock of black cire silk, and Mrs. Waller who was in rose pink net and gold lace. Special guests of the club were Mr. J. G. Groeninger. Consul for United States, Mr. Norman Heath, Consul for Latvia, and Mrs. Heath, who was wearing black taffeta; Mr. W. P. Endean. M.P., and Mrs. Endean, who was wearing gentian blue taffeta; Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P., and Mrs. Lyon, who was in black cire satin; and Mrs. W. E. Parry, who wore black ring velvet. Apologies for absence were received from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, and. the Consul for Belgium, M. Armand Nihotte.

Various toasts were honoured after which a programme was presented by Madame Vita Cornwall, Mr. Frank Cornwall, Mr. R. H. F. Grace, Mr. J. S. Finlayson, Mr. L. Booth and Mr. T. Vincent. The accompanists were Mr. J. Hutton (piano) and Mr. Allica (piano accordion).

PENWOMEN’S CLUB. ARTS AND CRAFTS CIRCLE. An instructive talk on lighting in modern advertising was given by Miss J. Harrison-Smith at the art circle of the Penwomen’s Club recently. A number of designs illustrated the talk. Several other memjwrs brought oil paintings, water colours and craft work for criticism. Mrs. C. Duckworth, the convener, presided. PROBLEM CLUB. The-monthly bridge afternoon of the Problem Club was held in Penwomen’s room recently. Prizewinners were: • Contract, Mrs. '■ Brockway; auction, Miss J. Hammond. During the afternoon Mrs. F. Heavy reservations of cubicles and lounges proved the popularity of the Peter Pan Cabaret on Saturday evening, and the excellent ballroom arrangements contributed to the enjoyment of the large throng of guests. The latest music supplied by Lauri Paddi and his band ensured the success of the programme, which varied its measure with slow and quick fox trots and jazz waltzes. Swing melodies infected the dancers with their syncopated rhythm, and the players had to respond to 'numerous encores. Singing-drummer Johnny Madden did double work towards the entertainment and gained a full measure of applause. An engagement celebration gave a festive air to a jolly gathering. NATIONAL PARTY, TITIRANGI BRANCH. The Titirangi branch of the National party held a successful card evening in the Titirangi Hotel on Saturday. There were 16 tables for bridge and live hundred, and Mrs. C. C. Leys and Mr. W. Pearson won the prizes for bridge, while Mr. and Mrs. Cutler were the successful five hundred players. BAHA’I MEETING. INTERESTING ADDRESS. *f ‘ The clubrooms of the Baha’i Society were brightly decorated with, flowers when numerous interested visitors were welcomed to the monthly meeting recently. An address was first given by Miss Mills, a visitor, who spoke of the great amount of work being done in the world by kindred societies, and of the necessity for the co-ordination of their efforts. Following this address was a talk by Mrs. Gordon Robertson outlining the salient points of the Baha’i conception of a new order of The necessity for co-operation, rather than competition, as a basic principle of society was stressed. The scheme of a new order of society in the future was. sketched out, “an earth-wide system of order based on spiritual faith,” and the possibilities of abolition of poverty under this scheme was discussed. A pianoforte solo was played by Mrs. Gordon Robertson, and a stimulating discussion among the young people during supper concluded a very pleasant evening. COMING OF AGE. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stock, of New Lynn, gave a most enjoyable evening in St. Thomas’ Hall, New Lynn. It was held in honour of their eldest daughter Esme, who was charmingly attired in white embossed chenille relief, with hair ornament of gold and necklace to match. Mrs. Stock wore cerise cloque and lace, and Miss Florence Stock chose a pastel pink frock. Songs were rendered by Miss Esme Stock and Mr. George Howell. Dancing occupied most of the evening, Mr. Johns -being a most efficient master of ceremonies. A pleasing feature of the evening was the presentation of two keys from the guest of honour’s parents.
