He then proceeded to Levitt, where he was arrested. Colston appeared in the Palmcrston North Police Court this morning c-luirgod with these offences, and in' explanation said that his only reason for absconding was an endeavour to got transferred to another place of confinement. He had only one eye and had to work in a quarry, which was dangerous. Detective-Sergeant Meiklojohn said the accused had written a letter to the authorities asking for hard laljonr instead ~i reformative detention. The magistrate. Mr. H. I\ Law ry. said it would have boon bettor had the accused written asking to !>e transferred. He must impose an extra term for escaping which would Ik? six months on top of his present sentence. On the other charge he was convicted and discharged. Colston was also charged with obtaining £2 from A. E. Thomas, of Lower Hutt, by means of a. valueless cheque, and also a pair of shoes and £4 5/ in money from Stuart Parlane, of Wellington, by means of a valueless cheque for £<).
