PLUNKET SOCIETY. HIGHER SALARIES PAID. DEFICIT IN ACCOUNTS. Restoration of salaries was tiie main factor responsible for the deficit in the district work and in the Karitane Hospital accounts, said the chairman. Mr. •I. H. Frater, at the annual meeting of the Plunket Society yesterday. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, publi-hed in yesterday"« "Star." Mr. Frater said that the outlay for salaries mu-t lie regarded as a permanent one and the society should take the necessary stej*- to guarantee an income sufficient to meet these calls. Kef err ing to the Dominion-wide campaign for funds, recently launched, he said it was his opinion that, while tins method of raising funds was suitable for one special object, some other method should be adopted when a regular income was required. Appeal to Parents. He suggested that a well-worded ap|«'al dm ft e<l to the parents of th" children who were receiving lienelits from the home might lie adopted. The recent alterations and addition* had depleted the liquid assets of tiie Karitane Hospital and the finances were not in a sound position. Mr, Frater continued, and more extensions were required. These included a new premature babies' ward, accommodation for another seven or eight trainees, and accommodation for a larger staff. These alterations and additions would exceed £3000. and the scheme would lie very difficult to finance from the present reserves. It had been a special recommendation of the special committee set up to go into the matter that the work should be gone on with subject t.i a restoration of the original Government grant of £1000 a year, and it had been left to the central, council to make representations to the Government. The result was now awaited. Additions Needed. In seconding the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. Dr. T. H Pottit referred to the need for further additions and said that the custom oi sending premature babies from other hospitals to the society for treatment made the matter one for the whole com munity. Further, it would not be pos sible to reduce the hours of nurses unti such time as more accommodation wa ; provided for them. At times Karitam nurses had to be asked to work three weeks with only one day off. The following officers were elected President, Mrs. ,T. C. Allan: viee-presi dents. Mrs. P. Coleman. Mrs. H.
