AMUSING EXCHANGE.
A "MISUNDERSTANDING." DOES NOT PREVENT FIXE. There was an amueing exchange in the Police Court this morning during the hearing of a case in which a man was charged with making a false statement under the Employment Promotion Act.
The Labour Department officer said that, had it not been for accused's crass stupidity he would not be before the Court. "Would you like to qualify that last remark?" said the magistrate, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, addressing the accueed. "It was all due to e. misunderstanding," was the reply. "Do you mean it was a misunderstanding that you were only fined £4 last time you were before the Court V "Of course I leave that to you," said accused, who added that he had been tempted to make the false statement, as his wife had been ill. In fact. #th» been ill for 15 years. . "If you say any more about your wife's illness I will be giving you money instead of lining you," said the magistrate. He closed the argument, however, with a fine of £X).
