UNIONIST'S DEATH.
YORKSHIRE MINE WORKER.
(Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 16. The death has occurred of Mr. Herbert Smith, president of the Yorkshire Mine Workers' Union. Mr. Smith, who was born in Yorkshire in 1860, and entered the mines at the age of 10, figured prominently in the great general strike of 1!)2«, when the trade unions supported the miners in their fight against reduced wages.
At an early age he made a study of local problems and of general questions affecting the underground worker, and this, combined with his valuable gift for keeping in mind the point at issue and refusing to be diverted from it, made him a most effective advocate for the men. In the course of the miners' struggle against the employers many statesmen, including Baldwin, Birkenhead, Churchill and Mac Donald, experienced his forceful speech and rock-like stolidity, and came to respect him highly as an opponent. He was elected president of the Miners' Federation in 1923, and resigned six years later.
