Of the decrease of nearly £8,000,000 in the value of imports in May", compared with May, 1937, more than £5,000,000 worth was in respect of raw materials, notably of raw cotton and wool. Cotton and woollen manufactures were ■ also the principal exports showing a de- - cline in value, against which there wu a l considerable increase in the value of machinery exported. \
