SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
HAWKE'S BAY SHOCK. SEVERAL WINDOWS BROKEN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Tuesday. Hawke's Bay was shaken by an earthquake lasting several scconds at 2 p.m. to-day. The shock was fairly severe, but did not last long enough to cause any serious damage. The first jolt brought people hurriedly out of shops and offices, and traffic was pulled up almost immediately. Although there is no report of any serious structural damage to buildings, some small windows were broken in shops, schools and houses in the central portion of the province. In two large department stores in Hastings crockery displays in windows were wrecked. Seismograph records taken by Mr. H. de Dennc, of Hastings, for the Dominion Observatory. Wellington, indicate that the disturbance was a local one of fairly severe intensity.
