FRESH RECORDS.
SEVERAL AT/TRENT BRDIGE. BRADMAN HAS TWO MORE IN PICKLE. Previous to the current Test England's highest innings was 636 at Sydney in 1928-29, and its only other aggregate of such dimensions was 627 for nine wickets (declared) at Manchester, in 1934. Australia twice exceeded 700—at Lord's in 1930 for six (declared), and at the Oval in 1934. That country failed by five runs only to again amass 700 in 1930, at the Oval in the fifth Test. The previous record fifth wicket stands for either country were:—l 92 by L. C. Braund and R. S. Foster at Sydney, in 1903-04, aad 183 by D. G. Bradman and A. Fairfax, at Melbourne, in 1925-29. Barnett and, Hutton's 219 is an English record on Home pitches, but is 104 runs lower than the opening of J. B. Hobbs and W. Rhodes at Melbourne in 1911-12. England's rorevious best individual knock in the Old Country was' C. P. Mead's IS2, not out,. at the Oval in 1921.. Hutton and Compton provided the only instance in Test cricket of two- players hitting hundreds in the same match when making their debut. Only two centuries were registered altogether in the six Tests already played at Trent.Bridge (A..C. Maclaren and D. G. Bradman). Now there, are four more innings. -Brudman's aggregate in Anplo-Australitn Tests is now 3457.' and he requires only ISO more to top -J. B. Hobbs' record of 3638. The latter s Test span was 1907 to 1930, while Biadmau's is from 1928 only. The Australian has averaged 88.64 runs per innings, compared to 54.26 by Hobbs. Both have a dozen three-figure tallied to their credit. It is. therefore, reasonable to suppose that the present series will see two more Bradman records established. ■W. R. Hammond's figures are:—23o7 runs, average 54.93; eight three-figure scores. .'. ■ In addition to Barnett and Hutton the members of two previous English opening ■pairs compiled centuries. They were Hobbs and Rhodes, at Melbourne in 191112; Hobbs and H. . Sutcliffe, at Melbourne, ■ 1924-23. Friday was- the first time the feat was performed in England. Australia's best opening stand on record is 180 by W. Bardsley and S. E. Gregory at the Oval in 1909. While the latter did not .reach the century the left-hander did so' in'-both innings' of that game.
