.1 FIGURES FROM BRITAIN. i British Official Wireless. 7 RUGBY, June 8. 1 1 The Ministry of Labour estimates I that on May 16 the number of insured persons in employment in Britain, exclusive of persons within the agricul--3 tural scheme, was approximately 1 11,375,000, or 15,000 less than a month 1 ! before and 148,000 less than a year before. I On the same date the registered I unemployed numbered 1,778,805, com- | prising 1,314,118 wholly unemployed, 397,52!) temporarily laid off, and 67,158 normally in casual employment. This I total is 31,041 more than on April 4 I and on a comparable basis 382,000 more I than on May 24, 1937. e 4 The increase is mainly accounted for 1 by the numbers temporarily laid off in ■ the coal and cotton industries. Also t included are 10,236 boys and girls newly l registered at the end of the Easter term.
