SATISFIED COUNCIL.

REBATE FOR PROMPT RATES.

BRINGS IN 60 PER CENT.

"Though there has been criticism in other places in connection with a rebate for the early payment of rates, we have found it successful, as the percentage paid within the rebate period reveals," said Mr. I. J. Goldstine, Mayor of One Tree Hill, at last night's meeting of the council, when the annual statement of accounts was being considered. The statement revealed that current municipal rates paid during the year amounted to 90.1 per cent of the" net levy, exactly the same percentage as for the previous year. The collection of arrears had been satisfactorily maintained, 68.7 per cent of the rates outstanding on April 1, 1937, being received, compared with 69 per cent for the previous year. On March 31 last the rates outstanding totalled £3308, which was lower by £15 than for March, 1937.

Rebate allowed for payment of rates, within the statutory period of 30 days from demand, totalled £340 3/7, com- [ pared with £309 for th« previous year. For the year under review, no less than BO per cent of the rates levied were paid subject to rebate, a new high level for the borough.

"The response to the offer of rebate enables us to carry on without calling on an overdraft," said Mr. Goldstine. "We are mors than satisfied."
