APPLICATION GRANTED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Despite strenuous opposition by residents of the. district an application for the transfer of the' license of the Parua Bay Hotel- to the site of a new building two miles nearer Whangarei was granted when the case came before the antli»l;, ; of the Marsden Licensing: yesterday. : ;Tne applicatiotr'waafiled by Patrick Cnaplin,; licensee of the. hotel which was destroyed ;by fire some time ago. The construction .iff' the ".new has been completed and only a few details of furnishing and equipment remain to be v finalised.' Prior to the meeting the committee inspected the new premises. ' " Mr. D.' L. Ross, who appeared for the applicant, pointed out that lavish expenditure had been incurred in the preparation of the new premises. ~ A memorial signed by a large number of residents of the district opposing the transfer of the , license was produced. The signatories objected to the transfer on the grounds that licensed premises not required in the district, that drinking after hours, as was so' often the case in country hotels, would create a nuisance to local residents, and that the road in the locality, and particularly where Ihe aew premises were situated, was dangarous and narrow.
The police stated that the new site for the, hotel' would enable a greater measure of supervision than had been possible at t^e^ji,f*te.
