THE ART OF SINGING.
LECTURE AT LYCEUM CLUB. In an address on the sinser's art given at the Lyceum Club last evening Mr. B. Thompson stressed the responsibilities undertaken by a singer. "A singer," he said, "is the intermediary between the poet and musician and it his work to recreate the ideas of both the poet ami the composer. To achieve an artistic resiilt. the singer should study each song carefully and intelligently so as to understand the intention of the poet and musician."
At the conclusion of Mr. Thompson's address an enjoyable musical programme was presented. Classical and modern English songs were given by Mr. James
Leighton. Mr. Vincent Aspey, with Mr. George Aspey as his accompanist, played several violin solos. Examples of English folk songs and German lieder were given by Miss Dawn Harding. Mrs. Hugh Fraser played the accompaniments for the singers.
The president of the Lyceum Club. Mrs. W. H. Parkes. was present at the meeting and the suests were received by Mrs. M. E. Trafford and Mrs. A. Campbell. Mrs. Parkes was wearing a frock of deep clover velvet. Mrs. Traffonl wore lilac and white floral chiffon and Mrs. Campbell was in black satin striped taffetas and net.
