HOTEL RAFFLES.

LIQUOR AS PRIZES.

WARNING TO LICENSEES.

Ifc is surprising how often licensees do not know what goes on in their hotels," said Mr. W. R. McKean. SAL, chairman of the Auckland Licensing Committee, at the annual meetin» to-dav. °

Mr. McKean mentioned the conviction recently of a barman in connection with a rafile which had been conducted in the bar, and in which the prizes were bottles of beer. '"The committee disapproves of raffles being conducted in hotels, and licensees must see it is put a stop to," he said. '"It looks as though some effort has been made to put a stop to betting in hotels.

"These dreadful raffles seem to be takiug the place of betting. It is really absurd to ask the committee to believe a. licensee doesn't know what is going on in the bar."
