Captain Of England?

Further light on the captaincy of England in the Test cricket aeries against Australia is revealed by the selection of teams for a trial at Lord's this week. R. W. V. Robins, who was leader against New Zealand last year, is not in either side; Hammond is to be leader of "England," while G. O. B. Allen will have charge of "The Rest." Recent advice from the Star s' London correspondent is that Allen is eager and willing to re-enter the lists against D. G. Bradman "only if he believes he could do himself justice as a fast bowler." Hammond had declared earlier that he had no desire to be captain. Although Hobbs is the only professional ever to captain England (at Manchester, 1926) it should be noted that Hammond is now playing as an amateur.
