FATAL INJURIES.

KNOCKED DOWN BY .CAR. RETURNED SOLDIER KILLED. Knocked down by a motor car at the corner of Great North Road and Surrey Street shortly after eight o'clock on Saturday evening, Mr. Ernest James Jones, aged 44, of Ariki Road, Grey Lynn, a returned soldier, received fatal injuries. The driver of the motor ear was Mr. Francis Michael Gaffaney, commercial traveller, of 9, Leslie Avenue, Mount Albert. A St. John ambulance arrived soon after the accident and took Mr. Jones to the Auckland Hospital, but he died before reaching hospital. The deceased was a single man. An inquest was opened to-day and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given.
