SAFE MAJORITY.
United Party in South African Government. LATEST RETURNS. (Received 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, May 20. The state of parties in tlie South African general election. with one return outstanding, is as follows: — United party 11l Nationalist party 26 Dominion party 8 Labour party 3 Socialist 1 I The Minister of Commerce. Mr. A. P. J. Fourie, was the only Minister not returned. General Hertzog's majority over his | Nationalist opponent was 520, but was i reduced in the final count. General I Smuts majority was 2000 votes. Mr. N. C. Havenga. Minister of i Finance, had a stiff light to retain his seat, but secured a majority of 331 | over his former Cabinet colleague, Mr. j Justice Beyers, who was Minister of j Mines in General Hertzog's Cabinet of pre-fusion days. It is expected Senator C. F. Clarkson. Minister of Posts, and the only Natal member of the Cabinet, will resign. Mr. P. G. W. Grobler, Minister of Native Affairs, did not seek re-election owing to ill-health. General Hertzog, with a clear majority of 73 in Parliament, will proceed to reconstruct his Cabinet.
