DEFINITE VICTORY FOR UNITY OF RACES.
S. AFRICAN POLL Policy of Hertzog-Smuts Party Endorsed. OPPOSITION LEADERS FALL. United Press Association. —Copyright. tßeceived 10.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, May 10. The state of parties in the South African general election up to the time of the latest returns is:— United party 80 Nationalist party 0 Dominion party 7 Labour party 3 Socialist 1 Three Ministers, General Smuts (deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of Justice), General J. C. Kemp (Lands), and Colonel Reitz (Agriculture and Forestry) have been returned. General Smuts secured 75 per cent of the votes in his electorate of Standerton.
The results of the election are accepted as a definite victory for unity of the two races, the policy of the United party. Counting in the rural areas is now in progress. It is anticipated that when the counting is concluded the United party, led by General Hertzog and General Smuts, which holds the Government benches, will have over 90 seats. Those defeated include Colonel Stallard and Mr. C. W. Coulter, the Dominion party's leader and deputyleader. The Dominion party won two Durban seats from the Government, which is attributable to the Englishspeaking province's reaction to the introduction of the Afrikaans National Anttiem, and also tear tliat the Government would abolish the term British subject. The Nationalists were never strong in the urban areas, and the real test of their opposition will be revealed after the rural counting. The "Cape Times," in an editorial, says: "The results show that the United party triumphed by sheer commonsen.se and loyalty to its great leaders. If the rural vote goes similarly we may well believe the last has been heard of the Dominion party's heresy, and the severest check has been given the Nationalists' dangerous and detestable racialism." The result of the elections in May, 1033, was: Nationalist (Hertzog) 7.3, South African (Smuts) 61, Labour (Coalition) 2, Labour 2, Roos 2, Home Rule 2, Independents 6. On December 5, 1934, the South African party and the Nationalist party were fused into the United party of" South Africa and the Dominion party made its appearance.
