CONTRACT BRIDGE.
WELL-TIMED FALSE CARD
(By THE FOUR ACES.)
While false-carding: on defence ie a dangerous toy to trifle with and more often than not fools the partner Tather than the declarer, there are occasional hands in which oven the wilieet player will be deceived by eiK'h tactics. The following hand, played'by four experts, is an excellent example of a judiciously-timed false card. South dealer. North-South vulnerable.
The Bidding. South West North East 1 4 Dbl. Redbl. Pass Paes 1 4t Pae« 2 * 2N.T. Paes 3N.T. Paee Pa.se Pa«e In the bidding West by a bluff informatory double attempted to deter his vulnerable opponents from contracting for game. Xorth promptly redoubled to show strength, and the pair then quickly reached their proper contract of three no trump. When West opened the deuce of Spadee and declarer played low from dummy, East did some quick thinking. He knew from the bidding that declarer held either the Ace or the King. Hence the suit would be stopped twice imleee declarer could be fooled into thinking that East held the high mkeing honour. At the riek of fooling hie partner, East, with no visible hesitation, false-carded with the Jack, and declarer, after winning with the Ace, played a diamond. Weet, on lead with the Ace of Diamonds, had the choice of continuing Spades or ehifting to a Heart. The Heart lead did not look promising, and he did have a vagne suspicion that hie partner might have been false-carding. When West led another low Spade, declarer, reasoning that the firet trick had marked the ten in the leader's hand, put up the nine. East, of couree, captured the trick with hift ten, and the apparently iron-clad contract was defeated.— (Copyright.)
