SUSTENANCE FRAUDS.
THREE MEN IMPRISONED.
FINES ALSO IMPOSED.
Three men who had obtained money by false pretences, the offences having been committed eince Mr. C. R. Orr Walker's warning last year, were sentenced to fehort terms of imprisonment by the same magistrate in the Police Court this morning. They were also fined on a charge of making a falee statement to obtain benefit under the Employment Promotion Act.
For making false statements Raymond Jenkinson was fined £5 and Cyril Martin £10. On a charge of false pretences Philip John Sam ways was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment and fined £5 for making a false statement; Norman William McCallum, sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for false pretences and fined £8 for making a false statement, and Alexander Grewar. who in August last had been fined £10 for making a false statement, was given 14 days' imprisonment for false pretences and fined £5 for making a false statement.
Grewar said he had got muddled in making his declarations, but the magistrate said it was more than carelessness and told Grewar he should have been doubly careful after his first prosecution.
